Liverpool fans unhappy with Raheem Sterling criticising Joe Gomez

Liverpool fans are unhappy with Raheem Sterling seemingly pointing a finger of blame at Reds defender Joe Gomez while on international duty.

England struggled to beat Iceland in their UEFA Nations League opener, which saw two players sent off and two penalties awarded on Saturday.

Sterling scored England's spot-kick before Gomez conceded a penalty in stoppage time.

But Birkir Bjarnason fired high and wide to gift England all three points from the Group B encounter at Laugardalsvollur National Stadium in Reykjavik.

Speaking after the game, match-winner Sterling labelled the mistake for the penalty "sloppy", which rubbed some Liverpool fans up the wrong way.

"We didn't expect the red card," Sterling told Sky Sports.

"But it happened and we kept on playing out football. We kept trying to create chances and kept contact then we got the penalty in the end.

"We shouldn't have conceded that sloppy penalty in the end. But we got lucky in the end."

Responding to Sterling's comment, one Reds fan said: "He hates Joe Gomez still and was disrespectful towards him after the game."

Another added: "[Jurgen] Klopp actually needs to stop sending Liverpool players to that camp. Horrible place to be in."

And a third Liverpool supporter concluded: "If he's going to talk about Gomez, he should talk about [Kyle] Walker as well".

Sterling and Gomez haven't always seen eye to eye and even came to blows before a Euro 2020 qualifier back in 2019.

The duo clashed in the England canteen, and needed to be pulled apart by their team-mates. Sterling was subsequently dropped "as a result of a disturbance in a private team area".
