Liverpool midfielder lifts lid on first-team target after Jurgen Klopp decision

Liverpool youngster Melkamu Frauendorf has explained how he is targeting a breakthrough into the first-team at Anfield.

The Reds signed the versatile midfielder from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2020. Since then the 19-year-old has been working at Kirkby with the club’s academy outfits.

Jurgen Klopp handed Frauendorf his first-team debut in Liverpool’s win over Derby County in the Carabao Cup in November. That remains the only involvement the teenager has had of senior football with the Reds, but he has impressed with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s Under-21 side.

Now Frauendorf has opened up on his time at Liverpool so far, and how he hopes to continue his path on the way to making more first-team appearances.

“I am happy with my progress,” Frauendorf told Liverpoolfc.com.

“The style of play is good for me and it is working well, so I am just trying to improve myself every day and aiming to keep getting better.

“If I can do that then hopefully I will have more chances with the first team.

“I’m really happy at this club. I like the people and I like training here, so I really enjoy playing at Liverpool.”

Frauendorf was also part of the Liverpool squad that travelled to Dubai for a training camp during the latter stages of the World Cup. The 19-year-old has explained how beneficial it was for him to train alongside the first-team squad, and the help he received from the other players and staff.

“It was amazing,” Frauendorf added. “That was the second time I had been away with the first team and to go out to Dubai was a great experience for me again.

“Having the opportunity to train with the first-team players and to spend some time with them helped me to learn even more and I could then try to improve different parts of my game.

“All the staff and players helped me in that and I enjoyed the trip and being in the first-team environment a lot.”
