Liverpool debate: Which trophy should be the priority in Man City battle?

There is a sense of unfinished business

Ian Doyle : The good news for Liverpool is there's already one trophy in the bag. The bad news, though, is that still might be all they end up winning this season. And it would probably be thanks to Manchester City.

A remarkable campaign continues to harbour the prospect of three more pieces of silverware and an unprecedented quadruple. To do that, though, the Reds are likely to have to overcome City on each occasion.

That's most definitely the case on Saturday when the teams meet in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. They remain on course for a Champions League final showdown, and they are scrapping over the Premier League crown with City just about keeping their noses in front with seven games remaining.

But if Liverpool can win only one, the answer is pretty obvious. At least for me.

Look, I am a big fan of the FA Cup. It is wrongly derided, is the most renowned domestic cup competition in world football and is still far, far superior to the League Cup. And while a seventh European Cup would be a magnificent achievement - particularly as it would stop City winning their first - there is a sense of unfinished business with the Premier League.

Having waited 30 years to be crowned champions of England, Liverpool supporters were denied the chance to celebrate properly with the team due to the coronavirus pandemic. They don't want to be waiting that long again. So for this outstanding team to be able to enjoy the full trappings of being a title-winner, it would be worth disappointment in the other two competitions.

Mind you, if Liverpool win all four, I won't be complaining...

There is something special about the European Cup

Tom Cavilla: Liverpool versus Manchester City has very much become the modern-day rivalry, fuelled by the success of both sides over the recent years. The two teams are battling it out for silverware once again this season and are going head-to-head in the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will have hopes of getting the better of the Sky Blues in each competition, though will be all too aware the quadruple is no simple task for any team. If Liverpool were to beat City to only one more trophy this season, I think it would be the European Cup. There is every chance the two teams will meet in the final of this year’s tournament, which could see the Reds deny the Citizens their first-ever taste of European success.

Denied the chance to properly celebrate the Premier League title during the 2019/20 season, it would be unforgettable to clinch the top-flight crown with supporters back in stadiums. On the other hand, there is something special about the European Cup – something City are yet to discover.
