Liverpool could repeat transfer which frustrated Manchester United as striker change looms

Here is your Liverpool digest for Wednesday, March 3.

FSG could repeat Thiago Alcantara transfer feat

Liverpool's move to sign Thiago Alcantara may have written FSG's rule book on transfers.

When FSG took over at Liverpool, they knew they would not be able to attract Europe's elite due to the club's position at the time.

Yet, by landing the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Fabinho, the Reds started to showcase their position was changing at football's top table.

It has seen the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland linked to Anfield over the last 12 months.

The deal to land Thiago represented the Reds' change in stance at being able to sign high-profile players courted by their Premier League rivals - and they may be able to repeat that trick with Raphael Varane.

Manchester United are keen to land the Real Madrid centre-back, who has just 18 months left on his contract at Los Blancos.

Yet he has also been linked with a move to Anfield - and the Reds could well repeat their Thiago trick 12 months on.

Change is coming for striker problem

Liverpool's front three have produced a remarkable level under Jurgen Klopp, with the trio developing a fearsome reputation for goals.

Yet something will soon have to give regarding the next generation.

The Reds' current front three will not be able to perform to their high standards forever, with Roberto Firmino coming under the spotlight at times this season.

Firmino has underperformed in comparison to his expected goals by around 10 in the last three years and change could be on the way, with the Brazilian looking likely to be the first player to eventually be replaced out of the Reds' front line.
