People were evacuated from flats this morning after reports of a 'gas leak.'
London Road was partially closed after a building, that's made up mainly of flats, was evacuated. Those in the building were told to leave after damage was caused to a gas pipe.
A spokesperson for Cadent Gas said they were alerted to the damage by construction workers who took the 'safety first' approach to evacuate the building. Merseyside police and fire fighters arrived at the scene, at around 9am, on Monday, June 20, to close the road between Gildart Street and Moss Street, as a precaution.

A spokesman for Merseyside’s gas emergency service Cadent has since confirmed that the building is safe and no gas leak was found. He said: "There are construction works taking place on London Road, inside a building that houses flats. It looks like there has been some damage caused to a gas pipe and, for understandable reasons, the people on site took a safety-first approach, evacuated the building and closed the road.
"Our engineers have arrived on site and confirmed everything is safe. The road is reopen. We are in the process of checking over each property’s gas supply.
"This shows the importance of being vigilant and acting fast regarding gas safety – if you ever smell gas, or suspect damage to gas pipes, act immediately and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999*, day or night."
