It’s officially comfort food season, and we may have found the best place in Liverpool to go for salt and pepper chicken.
Chungy’s on Hawthorne Road in Bootle has a loyal following of customers - and a recent visit confirmed why.
I took a trip to the tiny restaurant this week to find a queue of customers and more coming in - if the constant phone ringing is anything to go by.
The chippy has clearly already made an impression on customers, with recent Yell reviews naming it “the best place ever” and “the place to go”.
And it’s clear to see why once you’ve tasted the salt and pepper chicken.
Already being a huge fan of the Liverpool staple I was doubtful it would live up to my usual chippy, but Chungy’s definitely exceeded my expectations.
Ordering a selection of items on the menu including salt and pepper chicken, chips, fried rice, spring rolls and sauces, it was hard to choose just where to start.
The chips were proper chip shop chips, and were still piping hot despite the 20 minute journey home, but it was the chicken that stood apart from the crowd.
Perfectly balanced between soft and crunchy, and so full of flavour the salt and pepper chicken at Chungy’s is unlike any I’d eaten before.
The generous portion cost £5.20, and is worth every penny when paired with the deliciousness that is a tub of barbecue sauce.
Chungy’s serves up a range of classic Chinese and English dishes, including kung po chicken, char sui, and more, and is open from 5pm every day.
