Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp provides Alisson injury update ahead of return to training

Jurgen Klopp has ruled Alisson out of returning for Liverpool against Sheffield United this weekend - but says he is "really close" to being back now.

Alisson suffered an injury on the opening day of the season in the Reds' win over Norwich.

Since then summer signing Adrian has played between the sticks for Liverpool, but Alisson is nearing a return and could be back in training on Sunday.

Klopp said: "Alisson looks like he is close, but the final word is with the medical department. He's not in contention for tomorrow. Maybe he can train with the team from Sunday on. Really close."

There were fears Liverpool's hopes of competing for the title had taken an early blow when Alisson was forced off with an injury at Carrow Road.

But former West Ham shot-stopper Adrian has done a good job of filling the void at Anfield, with the Reds currently unbeaten in the Premier League.

Klopp added: "Adrian has done a brilliant job and that’s made everything easier 100 per cent. It's important with injuries that you do not rush it."

Liverpool travel to Yorkshire on Saturday, where they face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
