Andy Robertson insists he has “nothing to prove” in a Liverpool shirt amid suggestions he has been left unsettled by dwindling playing time.
The Scot has been at Liverpool since 2017, winning plenty of silverware since, but has seen his time on the pitch reduced somewhat this season following the summer signing of Milos Kerkez.
He came close to joining Tottenham in January as he looked for increased playing time, but ultimately stayed on Merseyside - a decision he surely does not regret given Spurs’ recent struggles.
And he proved on Friday night that he still had plenty to offer Arne Slot, scoring the opener and assisting Mohamed Salah as Liverpool breezed past Wolves to progress in the FA Cup.
Speaking afterwards, he said competition for minutes was part and parcel of life as a footballer.
"I'm not sure if I have a point to prove in a Liverpool shirt,” the 31-year-old told BBC One. “The fans know I give everything in a Liverpool shirt.
“When you get on the pitch you just want to enjoy it. It is what it is.
“Milos [Kerkez] is a fantastic left-back. He had an unbelievable season last season at Bournemouth. It took time to settle into a big club.
“The club has to move forward, the lads who have been here so long are not getting any younger. You have to accept it. I have had competition my whole career."
Slot also acknowledged his impressive performance, but pointed out that he was partly at fault for Hwang Hee-chan's injury-time consolation goal.
“I think they all want to play every single game, which is not always possible,” said the Dutchman, asked whether Robertson deserved a more substantial role in his side.
“Robbo hasn’t played as much as last season, but still played a lot of minutes. That is also due to the fact that we have two very good left full-backs, but he did his job very well today.
“If you are a full-back, a defender, and you score a goal and have an assist, and - I would almost say keep a clean sheet, but we conceded one at the end where he had his involvement - but I think he played a really good game.”
