Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp's big decision could offer hint to long-term transfer plan

Liverpool have already made three signings this summer in the form of Kostas Tsimikas, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota, but plenty of Reds fans would like Jurgen Klopp make one more.

Against Chelsea, with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip out injured, defensive midfielder Fabinho had to slot in at the back. As admirably as he performed against Timo Werner, the fact remains that the Brazilian is better in his usual number six berth.

Not signing another senior option in central defence - as appears likely to be the case at this stage - is perhaps the only major transfer decision that Liverpool have remaining in terms of incomings, while plenty could be heading for the exit door.

But by not signing another option this summer, could that offer a hint to what might be to come in future transfer windows?

Under Jurgen Klopp so far, the evidence is very much there that the German is ready to wait until the perfect option becomes available.

On the Blood Red podcast, Joe Rimmer said: "For now, I think they look alright and I wonder if Klopp is thinking ‘is there any point in bringing in a Klavan-type player for a limited amount of time?'

"They have scouted people like Ben White and if you are going to spend the money, then perhaps someone like him is a longer-term target.

"Fabinho can be a good option for the next year and then they can reassess that further down the line.

"You can go and get someone for £5-10million who can do a job but that is easier said than done. How many players like that are out there? I don’t know. I suspect Klopp has looked a lot at Fabinho and his midfield options and decided he can do a job.

"Liverpool never rush into things - James Milner played a full season at left-back and how many times the previous summer did we say ‘Liverpool need a left-back’.

"They refused to do it, it worked well enough, and then they found Andy Robertson who is going to be their left-back for the next however many years."

Brighton's White, who signed a new deal on the south coast a few weeks ago, is not the only young centre-back to have been linked with Liverpool in recent times.

According to German outlet Kicker, Dayot Upamecano's new contract extension at RB Leipzig includes a reduced release clause of around £37 million, which will be active from June 2021.

He was a player picked out by Red Bull Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch, in conversation with the ECHO, as someone who would be ideal for the Reds.

Others such as Schalke's Ozan Kabak have also been mooted as potential targets. The 20-year-old is very highly-rated by regular Bundesliga observers but it is understood Liverpool have no interest in pursuing him, with that stance unchanged from earlier in the transfer window.

Whatever the decision is that Klopp, Michael Edwards and Liverpool make, there is sure to be plenty of discussion over whether or not it is the right one.

But on the evidence so far, the Reds' judgement has always been correct.
