Liverpool add youngsters to Champions League squad as duo ruled out of Ajax game

Young defenders Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams are set to travel with the Liverpool squad to Amsterdam for Wednesday's Champions League group stage opener at Ajax.

The Reds short of defensive cover following the potentially season-ending injury suffered by Virgil van Dijk in Saturday's Merseyside derby draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Joel Matip, who started that game, will miss the trip to Amsterdam as a precaution as Jurgen Klopp seeks to protect him for the hectic schedule ahead, while Thiago Alcantara will also miss the trip after being on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Richarlison towards the end of the derby.

The Brazilian forward was sent off for the tackle, and Thiago was sent to hospital for a scan on his knee after limping away from Goodison Park.

However, the Spaniard's injury isn't thought to be too severe, and he could return to face Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday.

His presence in midfield is set to be crucial for Liverpool, as it allows for Fabinho to move back into defence to help cover for Van Dijk.

With Matip absent, Fabinho and Joe Gomez will be Liverpool's starting centre-backs at Ajax, with Phillips and Williams held in reserve.

Phillips spent most of last season on loan at Stuttgart in the German second tier, but he did return for a brief spell halfway through and impressed in the FA Cup win over Everton.

Williams, meanwhile, impressed in both of Liverpool's Carabao Cup fixtures this season against Lincoln City and Arsenal.
