05:18am: Russia launches overnight air attack on Ukraine's Dnipro

Russia launched an overnight air attack on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro, officials said early on Monday, with media reporting a series of blasts.

It was not immediately known whether the blasts were air defence systems destroying their targets or Russian missiles or drones hitting their targets but the governor of the

Dnipropetrovsk region, of which Dnipro is the administrative centre, praised defenders.

"Thanks to the defence forces, we withstood the attack. Details will come in due time," the governor Serhiy Lysak, said on his Telegram messaging app, referring to Russian forces as "terrorists".

02:41am: Brazil's Lula says meeting fell through because Ukraine's Zelensky was late

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Monday he was "upset" he and Volodymyr Zelensky did not meet at the G7 summit, adding his Ukrainian counterpart seemed uninterested in negotiating peace with Russia.

Zelensky, who emerged from the summit in Hiroshima with fresh diplomatic support and pledges of more military aid, had sought a one-on-one meeting with Lula, who has faced accusations of being soft on Russia over its invasion.

Both leaders said scheduling conflicts had prevented them from meeting -- which Zelensky quipped had likely left his Brazilian counterpart "disappointed".

02:16am: Russia says F-16 transfer to Ukraine would raise questions of NATO's involvement

The transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine would raise the question of NATO's involvement in the conflict, Russia's Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said in remarks published early on Monday.

Antonov also said in remarks published on the embassy's Telegram messaging channel that any Ukrainian strike on Crimea would be considered a strike on Russia.

"It is important that the United States be fully aware of the Russian response" (to such strikes), Antonov said.

9:19pm: Zelensky trying to 'clarify' earlier remarks on Bakhmut

"Zelensky sought to clarify earlier remarks when he gave that press conference at the G7 saying that as of now Russian forces do not occupy the whole of Bakhmut, because previously he'd spoken in phrase which made people think he was perhaps conceding that Bakhmut had fallen into Russian forces' hands after ten months of battle," FRANCE 24 senior correspondent Catherine Norris-Trent reported from Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine.

"He'd said that Bakhmut only now exists in our hearts and that there is nothing much left of the city. But since then various senior Ukrainian officials have sought to clarify that Ukrainian forces, they say, still hold on to a pocket of land inside this city in the Donbas."

2:34pm: Russia says Zelensky's presence made G7 a 'propaganda show'

Russia on Sunday accused G7 leaders of turning their summit in Japan into a "propaganda show" by inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and called the meeting's messages "anti-Russian" and "anti-Chinese".

"The leaders of the G7 brought to their meeting the ringleader of the Kyiv regime they control and turned the Hiroshima event into a propaganda show," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

1:50pm: Zelensky says Bakhmut 'not occupied'

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday insisted that the east Ukrainian city Bakhmut -- which Moscow claimed to have captured a day earlier -- was "not occupied."

"Bakhmut is not occupied by Russia today," Zelensky told a press conference during the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

"They are in Bakhmut," he said, not clarifying if that referred to Russian or Ukrainian troops.

"I cannot share with you the tactical views of our military. The most difficult thing would be if there was some tactical mistake in Bakhmut and our people were surrounded," he said.

1:03pm: Zelensky compares Bakhmut 'total destruction' to Hiroshima in 1945

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday compared the "total destruction" of the east Ukrainian town of Bakhmut to the 1945 devastation of Hiroshima after a nuclear strike. Hiroshima is currently hosting the G7 summit.

"The photos of Hiroshima remind me of Bakhmut. There is absolutely nothing alive, all the buildings are destroyed," Zelensky said. "Absolute total destruction. There is nothing, there are no people."

12:44pm: Ukraine says troops still engaging Russian forces in Bakhmut after Moscow announces victory in city

Ukrainian soldiers were still engaging Russian forces in fierce battles in and around Bakhmut on Sunday, military officials said, hours after Moscow and the private army Wagner announced that their troops had taken full control of the eastern city.

The fog of war made it impossible to confirm the situation on the ground in the invasion's longest battle, and a series of comments from Ukrainian and Russian officials added confusion to the matter.

Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar even went so far as to say that Ukrainian troops “took the city in a semi-encirclement.”

“The enemy failed to surround Bakhmut, and they lost part of the dominant heights around the city,” Malyar said. “That is, the advance of our troops in the suburbs along the flanks, which is still ongoing, greatly complicates the enemy’s presence in Bakhmut.”

Her comments came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at the Group of Seven summit in Japan, appeared to suggest that Bakhmut had fallen.

Russia "will not break" the resolve of Ukraine's allies, US President Joe Biden said Sunday after talks with Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

1:00am: Putin congratulates Wagner, Russia army on capturing Bakhmut

Russian President Vladimir Putin late Saturday congratulated the Wagner mercenary group and the national army on their claimed capture of the east Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, according to a Kremlin statement quoted by Russian news agencies.

"Vladimir Putin congratulated the assault units of Wagner as well as all servicemen of units of the Russian armed forces who provided them with the necessary support and flank cover, on the completion of the operation to liberate Artemovsk (the Soviet-era name for Bakhmut)," the TASS news agency quoted the Kremlin statement as saying.

12:06am: Russia says Wagner private army, with help from Russian troops, seized Bakhmut

Russia’s defence ministry said early Sunday that forces of the Wagner private army, with the support of Russian troops, seized the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.

The ministry statement on the Telegram channel came about eight hours after a similar claim by Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin. Ukrainian authorities at that time said fighting for Bakhmut was continuing.

The eight-month battle for the city in eastern Ukraine is the longest and probably most bloody of the conflict in Ukraine.

Using the city's Soviet-era name, the Russian ministry said, “In the Artyomovsk tactical direction, the assault teams of the Wagner private military company with the support of artillery and aviation of the southern battlegroup has completed the liberation of the city of Artyomovsk". There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials about the latest claim.
