This is an awesome book! It’s the fifth book in the Hetty Feather series and tells the story of Hetty and Diamond, who decide to run away from the circus to join the music hall. They audition at the music hall but don’t get a job. Hetty is devastated but then has the idea of doing a ventriloquist act with Diamond as the dummy.
The manager of the music hall loves their new act and they start their life in the music hall. Their act is very successful but the music hall isn’t as glamorous or glitzy as Hetty thought it would be; for one thing the audience gets drunk every night, and Hetty begins to wonder if this is really the life for her.
Throughout the book you think you know what’s going to happen next but something big and unexpected happens near the end that changes everything. The story is told from Hetty’s point of view, but my favourite character in the book is Diamond because she’s brave when everyone and everything around her is in chaos.
This is one of the best books Jacqueline Wilson has ever written. I couldn’t put it down and I read it in one go!
