Little girl in Glasgow's George Square takes over busker's mic and is now viral internet hit

Plucky performer Karla Rose Conway is becoming an internet sensation - after wowing Christmas crowds in central Glasgow.

The six-year-old from Rutherglen grabbed a busker’s mic for an impromptu rendition of a seasonal Scots poem she learned in school.

As well as getting a standing ovation in George Square, a video shot by beaming mum Kerry-Ann has now reached a global audience.

Karla Rose was watching the busker play when he offered her his mic and a bashful Karla accepted.

As she began her rendition of a festive poem, she drew the attention of passers-by who were keen to cheer her own.

Proud Kerry-Ann, 26, said: “I was focused on the video and when she finished everybody started clapping - I didn’t realise so many people were there. She was made up, it was so good.”

They were on a trip into the city on Saturday to see the Christmas lights with Karla’s two-year-old brother Connor, Kerry-Ann’s partner Gerry McLaughlin, 39, and his daughter Karis, seven.

Kerry-Ann said: “There was a busker there and Karla got the opportunity. She was a bit bashful at first but there was a big smile at the end.”

Karla learned the poem at St Columbkille's primary as part of the school’s Christmas celebrations.

Kerry-Ann said: “Her teacher, Catherine McDonald, taught her the poem in Scots and they did a virtual show for all the parents.”

And the surprise show in George Square came as a welcome release for little Karla after a frustrating year.

Kerry-Ann said: “She’s part of a dance group but with Covid, she hasn’t been able to go to classes.”

The video has chalked-up more than 1,000 likes and been shared around the world - with Karla’s success no great shock.

Kerry-Ann said: “She’s always singing in the house, every opportunity. From the age of two she was singing Jolene by Dolly Parton.

"Her uncle, Franny Conway, is a karaoke presenter and she’s always asking him for a go - it turns into the Karla show.”
