For £2.2m you can be king or queen of your own castle. Dating back to the early 16th century, Craighall Castle is perched on a Perthshire cliff overlooking the river Ericht. Sir Walter Scott used to hang out here in the early 1800s. There are 10 bedrooms, numerous sitting rooms, games rooms and storage rooms, a library and study. There is also separate accommodation in the old domestic quarters, but the real fun lies in the octagonal tower, spiral stone staircase and battlements.

Want a house with a rich history? The Old School House in Rudgwick, West Sussex, was a village school, then a police station, and is now a grade II-listed home. Dating back to 1720, the vaulted sitting room was once the main classroom – the original school bell and ornate wooden school plaques are still on the wall. Other original features include a cast iron fireplace, wall and ceiling beams and bread ovens. Thankfully no police cells remain. For £1.05m you get five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a studio barn.

It’s all concealed trap doors, oak-panelled walls, four-poster beds and flagstone floors at Tintinhull Court, a medieval priest’s house in 18 acres of Somerset countryside. The floorboards of this seven-bed, grade I-listed house creak with atmosphere. There are exposed roof trusses, carvings from the 14th century, and 17th-century wall panels in the two drawing rooms – one of which has a hidden trap door with steps down to the cellar. It has a banquet-sized dining room, a library, a study and a large kitchen. The price tag is a hefty £2m.

It might be uninhabitable, but you’d have an impressive relic on your hands if you bought this grade II-listed deconsecrated church in Wrexham. For £25,000, the former St Peter’s Church is perfectly preserved with mullioned stained glass windows, sandstone sills, rows of pews and a large bell tower. Marble steps lead you up to the altar, and there’s a carved wood lectern and pulpit. Built in 1894 it needs planning permission, but in the meantime you’ll have your very own sanctuary.
