Lisburn man Johnny McKinstry celebrating first trophy with Uganda national team

Johnny McKinstry is celebrating after lifting his first trophy as manager of Uganda.

McKinstry, who was appointed by the Cranes in late September, saw his side defeat Eritrea 3-0 to clinch the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

The Lisburn native, who previously managed both Sierra Leone and Rwanda, saw Bright Anukani curl home the opener after 31 minutes.

Mustafa Kizza and Joel Madondo scored in the second half to seal the title.

It saw McKinstry go one better than in 2015 where he was named coach of the tournament after leading Rwanda to the final despite losing out to Uganda in the decider.

McKinstry said: "Extremely proud of all the Uganda Cranes players and staff for what has been a perfect run of six wins from six games to lift the Cecafa Challenge Cup 2019.

"The last few months have seen steady improvement, and this is one more step in developing for future success."

Uganda are a team on the rise, having securing qualification for AFCON (2017, 2019) and reaching the first knock-out round (2019) - having not qualified for AFCON for the previous 40 years.

Whilst in charge of Sierra Leone, McKinstry was the youngest international manager in the world at 27 years, and led the team into the top 50 of the Fifa world rankings and this latest success is another example of a manager very much on his way to the top.
