Lions' Rayner steps up ACL recovery

Cameron Rayner was mobbed by Brisbane AFL teammates as he resumed running following his ACL surgery. (AAP)

Brisbane's Cameron Rayner was mobbed by AFL teammates at the Gabba on Tuesday as he jogged laps of the Gabba for the first time after knee surgery in March.

The former No.1 draft pick was eyeing a larger midfield role for the Lions this AFL season and in terrific shape before tearing his ACL in a preseason clash with the Gold Coast.

A bashful Rayner was called in front of the group and forced to reminisce about his rookie 2018 season, where he emerged as a destructive, physical talent who despised running laps.

"I'll probably run quicker today than I did in the 2km time trial at the draft," he laughed.

"I'm looking forward to getting back and moving well."

Rayner's rehabilitation is progressing well but, while he joked that he would be ready for a recall to play GWS Giants on Saturday at the Gabba, he is unlikely to feature again until next season.
