Lionel Messi's absence from Major League Soccer may soon be coming to an end.
After leading Argentina to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, the Inter Miami superstar is expected to return to club action in early August following a mandatory recovery period, giving MLS fans hope that one of the league's biggest attractions will soon be back on the pitch.
Messi has not played for Inter Miami since leaving to captain Argentina during the World Cup, where the defending champions fell 1-0 to Spain after extra time in the July 19 final. The 39-year-old played 740 minutes during the tournament, helping Argentina reach another championship match while scoring eight goals in what is widely expected to be his final World Cup appearance.
Following the tournament, Messi returned to his hometown of Rosario to spend time with his family and recover before rejoining Inter Miami for the second half of the MLS season. He has already been ruled out of the MLS All-Star Game and recent league matches as part of an approved recovery plan.
Under player welfare guidelines agreed to by FIFA and FIFPRO, World Cup participants are entitled to a 21-day post-tournament rest period before returning to club competition. That means Messi is eligible to remain away until at least Aug. 9 without facing any league sanctions, although Inter Miami could welcome him back sooner if both the player and club determine he is ready.
Multiple reports point to Inter Miami's Aug. 1 home match against the Columbus Crew as the earliest realistic opportunity for Messi's return. If the club chooses to be more cautious, he could instead make his comeback during the Leagues Cup, beginning with Miami's Aug. 5 match against Atlético de San Luis, followed by high-profile games against Monterrey and Club León.
His return could not come at a better time for Inter Miami.
The club enters a critical stretch of the season with MLS playoff positioning on the line while also preparing for another Leagues Cup campaign. Miami recently bolstered its roster by signing Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, giving Messi another experienced teammate as the club chases more silverware.
Messi's comeback is also expected to provide another boost for MLS attendance and television audiences. Since arriving in the United States in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has transformed the league's global profile, routinely selling out stadiums on the road and driving record viewership.
While Inter Miami has yet to announce an official return date, all signs point to fans seeing Messi back in pink within the first weeks of August. Whether it comes against Columbus or during the Leagues Cup, his return will mark one of the biggest moments of the MLS summer season.
