Lionel Messi 'nears agreement' to leave Paris Saint-Germain after World Cup

Lionel Messi is reportedly close to sealing a move to Inter Miami - where a former Everton star will be his new manager.

Messi is currently contracted to Paris Saint-Germain, but his deal is set to expire at the end of the season. The Argentina international signed a two-year contract with the Ligue 1 giants in 2021, after ending his lengthy stint at Barcelona.

However, speculation has continued to swirl over whether or not Messi will sign a new contract at PSG or leave for a new adventure. And if reports are to be believed, Messi could be going to a new continent as well as a new club.

According to The Times, Messi is nearing an agreement to join Inter Miami. It has been reported that the 35-year-old will link up with the Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit once the World Cup in Qatar is completed.

The article goes a step further by saying that, once the deal is completed, Messi would become the highest paid player in MLS history. Even though the report does not say specifically when Messi would join, it’s likely it will be at the end of PSG’s season so he would be able to move to Miami on a free transfer when his contract expires.

Should this deal go through, Messi would link up with former Everton midfielder Phil Neville, who is manager of Inter Miami. The MLS outfit are co-owned by ex-Manchester United star David Beckham, a former team-mate of Neville’s.

The former Everton star has previously spoken of his desire to see world class talent arrive at Miami. While Messi was not mentioned directly by name, the ex-Boue has hinted that he wants the star forward in his ranks.

“This club will always want to bring a superstar to Miami, and a lot of top players want to come here because of where we are,” said Neville in February.
