Lionel Messi injury update ahead of Barcelona clash with Man Utd

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has confirmed Lionel Messi will be fit to face Manchester United on Tuesday night.

Messi was left bloodied by a collision with Chris Smalling in the first leg at Old Trafford and was left out of Barcelona's 0-0 draw at lowly Huesca at the weekend.

But the Argentinian maestro will now come back into their side as they aim to defend a 1-0 lead against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

"Messi is fine and perfectly ready for tomorrow," Valverde said at his pre-game press conference.

What happened at Man Utd 'that changed Philippe Coutinho's mind over transfer'

Remarkably, Messi has still never found the net in a Champions League quarter-final.

The incredible statistic is no cause for concern for Valverde, however, who says it makes him more confident he will find the back of the net against the Red Devils.

He commented: "That Messi has 12 games in the quarter-finals of the Champions League without scoring means he is closer to scoring.

"The statistics are good because they are based on the past and they do not say anything about the future."

Man Utd squad revealed for Barcelona clash - including shock addition

United are facing a daunting task as they aim to come from behind at the Nou Camp.

And Valverde has called on his side to control the game by maintaining possession and pressing their rivals where necessary.

He added: "It's always important to maintain control, be safe with the ball or be prepared to press.

"It's not just a defensive issue, it's always important to avoid the game getting out of control."
