Lionel Messi clone warning for Rangers as Dutch legend talks up Willem II's star man

Former PSV Eindhoven standout Rene van der Gijp has warned Rangers they are about to take on the Greek Lionel Messi,

Rangers travel to Tilburg to face Willem II in the third qualifying round of the Europa League and have been pit on alert about Vangelis Pavlidis.

The Eredivisie side warmed up for the clash with a 4-0 win against Heracles after a 5-0 win at a former nemesis of Steven Gerrard 's side, Progres Niederkorn.

In both of these games, 21-year-old Greek international striker Pavlidis hit a double and the former Borussia Dortmund starlet has been tipped to give Rangers problems by van der Gijp, who is now a top TV pundit in the Netherlands.

Van der Gijp said: "I have been particularly impressed by the Willem II striker Pavlidis recently.

"He was really given away by Borussia Dortmund, but they may regret that because he's a top player in the Eredivisie.

"He is very good at keeping the ball close to himself when he is dribbling and dares his opponent to put a tackle in.

"In fact, he reminds me of Lionel Messi because he has a bit of what he does.

"He runs at the defender then seems to make a decision at the last moment and it usually seems to be the right one. He will win a lot of penalties because he invites challenges on him.

"Vangelis has fast feet and he's playing really well at the moment.

"He's causing a lot of problems for teams and will be a big player for Willem II against Rangers this week in the Europa League."
