Linenspa vs Lucid mattress toppers: Which one should you buy?

Composite image of Linenspa and Lucid mattress toppers, both on beds with cushions on top.

If your new bed is a little too firm or soft, or your existing mattress is starting to show a few signs of aging, a mattress topper could be the perfect solution. These mini mattresses add a few inches of varying materials to your mattress and can completely change its feel. Linenspa and Lucid are two of the big names producing reasonably priced toppers, but which one is best suited to your sleeping style?

Like the best mattresses, mattress toppers come in a variety of materials but the Linenspa and Lucid versions concentrate on using memory foam for a contouring and supportive feel. You’ll find the Lucid mattress topper included in our best mattress toppers round up but that doesn’t mean that the Linenspa doesn’t have plenty to recommend it.

If you’re looking for the best back to school deals and you're particularly in need of one of the best mattress toppers for college dorms, these are definitely two toppers to consider. In this Linenspa vs Lucid mattress toppers comparison we’ll look at each topper in detail to help you decide which is the best pick for your needs.

Linenspa vs Lucid mattress toppers: Price & trial

  • Both mattress toppers are available for budget prices
  • Frequent deals and discounts mean you’ll usually be able to find both toppers at a discount
  • You’ll get a 3-year warranty with both toppers but Lucid also offer a 30-night sleep trial

Both the Linenspa and Lucid mattress toppers are available in different thickness options, with the cheapest toppers being two inches in height. These toppers are already in the budget bracket but there are often deals to be had — either on the brands' own websites or on Amazon, where both toppers are also sold.

A queen Linenspa 2” topper retails at $59.99 full price but the current discount with code TAKE15 takes 15% off this price, bringing a queen down to $51. If you want the thicker topper at 3”, a queen is $89.99 at full price, reduced to $76.50 with the discount. Lucid’s 2” topper retails for $69.99 but there’s currently 25% off, which brings the price down to $52.49. The most expensive Lucid option is the 4” topper, with a queen at $102 after discount (MSRP $119.99).

You’ll get a three-year warranty with both toppers, along with free shipping. The Lucid mattress topper also comes with a 30-night sleep trial, which means you can try the topper out at home to see if it suits your sleeping style, and Linenspa allows returns within 30 days of purchase too. Both toppers are also available on Amazon so it's always worth checking there as well to see if prices are cheaper.

Linenspa vs Lucid mattress toppers: Materials & design

  • The Linenspa topper is available in 2” or 3” heights
  • The Lucid topper comes in either 2”, 3” or 4” heights
  • The Lucid topper has ventilated foam for better airflow

Both the Linenspa and Lucid mattress toppers employ a simple design, with each being made with a thick slab of gel-infused memory foam. You’ll find this foam in many cooling gel mattress toppers, with the idea being that the gel helps to dissipate heat overnight. In reality, gel infusions aren’t always as good as they sound on the tin. However, if you go for the 2” or 3” versions of either topper, they should be thin enough to avoid trapping too much heat.

The Lucid topper adds to its breathability by ventilating the foam with small perforations to enable better airflow. This open-cell construction definitely helps to enhance breathability and is particularly useful if you decide to go for the thicker 4” version of the topper. We’d recommend using both toppers with one of the best mattress protectors to help protect them from any stains. Both toppers are made with CertiPUR-US certified foam.

Linenspa vs Lucid mattress toppers: Comfort & support

  • Both toppers are designed to add more plushness to a mattress
  • The thicker the topper, the softer your bed will become.
  • Both toppers are best suited to side sleepers

If your existing mattress is a little too firm or perhaps you’ve just purchased it and need to soften it up a little, the Linenspa and Lucid mattress toppers could be the perfect fit for these tasks. We haven’t reviewed the Linenspa topper, but customer reviews say that it’s perfect for softening a too-firm mattress and provides plenty of cushioning comfort thanks to its plush memory foam. We’d recommend the topper to side sleepers in particular, who will enjoy the cushioning at their pressure points. Do note that some reviews reported off-gassing with this topper.

In our Lucid Gel Memory Foam mattress topper review, our tester slept on the thickest 4” version of the topper, again finding it most suited to side sleepers. This version of the topper is particularly plush, as you’d expect from its depth, but provided plenty of cozy comfort and contouring around pressure points.

Both toppers are going to be too soft for stomach sleepers, and we think that many back sleepers will find them lacking in lumbar support. So, if you need to soften up a firm bed and sleep on your back, we’d recommend going for the thinnest 2” version of each topper. One other thing to note when it comes to support is that these toppers can take between 24 and 72 hours to fully decompress once unpacked, so best not to sleep on them immediately.

Linenspa vs Lucid mattress toppers: Temperature control

  • Both toppers use memory foam, which is notorious for trapping heat
  • The foam is gel-infused to try and help with temperature regulation
  • The Lucid topper employs open-cell technology to encourage airflow

As a rule, memory foam isn’t the first material we’d recommend to hot sleepers. It’s notorious for trapping heat and can make beds feel very hot overnight. Both the Linenspa and Lucid mattress toppers use gel-infused foam, with cooling gel beads in the foam, to try to help regulate temperature. But the Lucid also has open-cell technology, with thousands of small perforations in the foam that help to encourage airflow.

This combination and the ventilated design of the Lucid topper meant that our tester never felt hot overnight, instead being pleasantly surprised by how well the topper regulated temperature. By contrast, user reviews suggest that the Linenspa is guilty of trapping heat, with reviews saying that the supposedly cooling topper is either temperature-neutral or sleeps warm.

Linenspa vs Lucid mattress toppers: Which should you buy?

Buy the Linenspa mattress topper if…

You’re on a tighter budget: At full MSRP, the Linenspa is cheaper than the Lucid topper and with discounts applied, this remains the same. So, if you really want to spend as little as possible, choose the Linenspa topper.

You need a short queen size: The Linenspa has a slightly larger selection of sizes, including a short queen size, so could be a better choice for that unusual bed shape.

You want a cheap option for a guest room or college dorm: With its cheaper price and slightly thinner profile choices, the Linenspa could be a good option for occasional use or for kids going away to college.

Choose the Lucid mattress topper if…

You sleep hot: Although this is a foam topper, the gel-infusion and open-cell technology work extremely well together to keep sleepers cool at night.

You want maximum plushness: With the option of a 4” topper, the Lucid is ideal for side sleepers and those looking to really cushion their pressure points.

You want a sleep trial: The Lucid topper comes with a 30-night trial to allow you to try it out in the comfort of your own home.
