Limerick boss John Kiely insists there is more to come after thrashing Tipperary

Limerick boss John Kiely insists there is still room for big improvement despite their landslide win over a much-fancied Tipperary in yesterday’s munster final.

And he will certainly be turning attention to sharpening their attack after they shot 18 wides and butchered a string of goal chances.

“We did leave scores after us, there’s no two ways about that,” said Kiely.

“Believe me, we left too many – it’s the only possible stain on the performance for me, that we didn’t put it to bed earlier.

“There was a three or four-point swing after half-time when we could have been six points up, they came up the field and got a goal – a swing of four or five points in about two minutes.

“I said to myself, ‘yeah, we’re destined to make this a really tough slog’ but we pushed on.”

But Kiely was thrilled with the workrate, resulting in multiple turnovers and creating the chances which eventually buried Tipp.

“We worked really hard and just didn’t give their half-backs and midfielders the time to pass in quality ball to their forwards,” Kiely insisted.

“I think that’s reflected in the scoreboard.

“When you can apply yourself, that high level of workrate, you are going to compromise their ability to get the ball in.

“It’s going to have an impact on the game and you’ll probably create some chances yourself.

“We got a good few scores on turnovers as well.”

Limerick are now just 70 minutes away from reaching another All-Ireland final – they haven’t been in successive finals since 1974 – but Kiely was just relieved they delivered on their home patch.

He added: “If we didn’t produce today it would have been very disappointing.

“For that reason it probably did put us under a lot of pressure out there but the boys reacted very well under pressure.”
