In October 1993, Lily Savage headlined Stonewall’s Equality Show at the London Palladium. Billed as the biggest ever gay variety show, it raised money for Stonewall’s first national campaign for an equal age of consent – the beginning of 10 years of major law reform for lesbians and gay men. Paul O’Grady (Obituary, 29 March) was a longtime supporter of these struggles, and Lily was one of the movement’s most indomitable and glamorous warriors.

By the 1970s, guidance on my role was available in the Penguin book Managers and Their Wives: A Study of Career and Family Relationships in the Middle Class. Never had time to read it.

• Taxpayers are no longer paying back the debt incurred by compensation to slave owners after the abolition of slavery in 1833 (Letters, 20 March). Much of the £20m paid to plantation owners was raised by undated bonds, and in 2015 George Osborne redeemed all undated government debt.

• Your report (Tories split over sites for refugee housing and deadline for stopping small boats, 29 March) quotes Robert Jenrick as saying people smugglers “are some of the most evil, most pernicious people in society. You have to match them...” Such ambition.
