Lily Douglas meets the stars at Pride of Scotland Awards bash

Perth ’s own Lily Douglas has been honoured with a Pride of Scotland Award.

The 13-year-old, who has been in everybody’s thoughts for the last four years as she has courageously battled with cancer, met an array of stars at the awards ceremony on Wednesday.

The St John’s RC Academy pupil was invited to go to Edinburgh for a glittering bash on Wednesday night to receive her prize - the Teenager of Courage award.

The recognition comes to her following her decision to walk to raise money for NHS charities in honour of Captain Tom Moore, the amazing former soldier who did laps of his garden with his walking frame.

When Tom died earlier this year, Lily was moved to make an effort herself.

Dancer Lily has Ewing’s Sarcoma, a bone and soft tissue cancer that saw her endure countless operations and treatment regimes.

A stroke last year caused weakness on her right side but despite now needing a wheelchair, Lily began fundraising by attempting to walk at her home in Perth.

She has so far raised £3380 .

Mum Jane shared the excitement they both felt when Lily got an invitation to attend Hopetoun House for the awards ceremony.

“We are over the moon. Lily had the most amazing surprise,” she said.

The PA spoke to Jane on Thursday morning after the big night.

Jane said: “I’d just like to thank everyone for a wonderful night. Seeing Arlene Phillips (dance choreographer) made us cry. Arlene brought Lily some Gucci perfume.

Lily holds her courageous teenager award with Love Island couple Paige and Finn (internet grab)

“Lily loved seeing Paige and Finn (the 2020 winning couple from TV’s Love Island).

“Paige and Finn now follow her on Instagram, so that’s made her year.

“Celtic striker John Hartson came to speak with Lily and everyone was so lovely.

“The night was amazing and we can’t wait to see it on telly.”

Lily is in great company as the winners have all made their personal mark on Scotland, nominated as great unsung heroes, ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

The Pride of Scotland ceremony was hosted by Kirsty Gallacher and Nicky Campbell.

Kirsty said: “This show is all about celebrating the absolute best of Scotland, no matter how young or old.”

The awards will be broadcast on STV on July 27.
