Lightning strikes twice in Super Netball thriller

Cara Koenen starred and for the second time in as many weeks Donnell Wallam nailed the match-winning goal as the Sunshine Coast Lightning beat NSW Swifts.

Like they did a week earlier, the hosts started slowly but commanded the middle two quarters before prevailing in a tense finale.

Their 66-65 victory followed a one-goal defeat of the Queensland Firebirds last Saturday as the Lightning moved to 2-1.

Down by five, the Swifts (1-2) edged closer and then managed a turnover with four minutes to play that helped them go ahead courtesy of a Helen Housby Super Shot.

The Lightning held their nerve though and, with the scores level, pounced when Housby's Super Shot with a minute to play missed.

Wallam (54-from-63) hit the go-ahead goal with 47 seconds to play and the Lightning then went backwards from the restart, controlling possession until the final whistle.

Wallam's clutch shot followed her game-winning Super Shot a week earlier against her former team the Firebirds.

Koenen (12-of-14, 16 goal assists) was heavily involved outside the arc, linking with mid-court star Liz Watson and allowing Wallam the space to go to work.

"Two weeks in a row, probably not good for the heart," Koenen said.

"There were patches of brilliance in there, definitely need to be more consistent, but points on the board ... it's all good."

Whyte

The Lightning didn't make any of their four Super Shot attempts, while Housby made three-of-seven and Grace Whyte nailed both of hers for the Swifts.

"We weren't brave taking that on, but composure to play the last 45 seconds (was impressive)," Koenen said.

"We run those (end-of-game) scenarios hoping we don't have to repeat it, but here we find ourselves again."

Grace Nweke (50-of-55) was perfect in the first quarter as the Swifts jumped to the lead, even under the immense pressure of Courtney Bruce.
