Collingwood will avoid the AFLW wooden spoon after making the most of a lightning delay to beat last-placed Gold Coast by 15 points at Bond University.

The Suns were holding a one-point lead at three-quarter time of Sunday's match on the Gold Coast when players were forced off for 20 minutes due to lightning in the area.

Bright sunshine and a rainbow greeted players when play resumed, and it was Nell Morris-Dalton who kicked the only two goals of the final quarter to help the Magpies to a 5.9 (39) to 3.6 (24) win.

Morris-Dalton finished with a career-high three goals, while Airlie Runnalls racked up 23 disposals and 11 tackles.

Star Gold Coast midfielder Charlie Rowbottom was best afield with 35 disposals, 11 clearances and eight tackles.

The result snapped Collingwood's five-match losing run, and lifted the Magpies (3-8) from 17th to 14th.

Gold Coast (1-10, 37.5 per cent) have now lost seven straight, and must beat fellow strugglers Richmond (2-9, 59.6 per cent) in the final round by a sizeable margin to avoid the wooden spoon.

The opening quarter looked set to be a goalless affair until Alana Porter turned on the turbo to score from close range and give the Magpies a five-point edge at the first break.

The second quarter was a battlefield as a number of players went down with injury.

Gold Coast's Wallis Randell was helped off with an ankle strain, while Tayla Gregory was carried off for treatment on a knee injury.

On the stroke of halftime, Collingwood star Brittany Bonnici hit the turf in a world of pain and looked to have a limp as she trudged her way to the rooms.

Bonnici and Randell were able to return in the third quarter, but Gregory was ruled out for the rest of the match and will undergo further assessments to determine the extent of her injury.

The way Gregory's knee buckled as she attempted to change direction was a worrying sign.

Ella Smith and Havana Harris nailed long-range bombs in the second quarter as Gold Coast edged six points ahead, but the margin was back to one point by halftime after Morris-Dalton kicked accurately after a juggling mark.

The third quarter was another arm wrestle, but Morris-Dalton broke the game open in the last term after the lightning break to send Collingwood on their way.

It marked the second AFLW match of the day to be hampered by lightning after a storm interrupted Carlton's 46-point win over GWS at Ikon Park.
