Life Kitchen chef Ryan Riley launches free cookbook for those living with cancer

Life Kitchen founder Ryan Riley has announced his second cookbook, which will be free for those living with cancer.

Released on December 1, A Life Kitchen Christmas contains more than 20 recipes both quick and easy to do, and full of strong flavours – in order to combat the loss of taste and smell some cancer patients experience as a result of treatment.

Ahead of his first cookbook in March, Riley worked with University of London professor Barry Smith – founder of the Centre for the Study of the Senses – to pinpoint ingredients and textures that can stimulate sensation in the nose and mouth, including mint, horseradish, aged cheeses, mushrooms and soy sauce.

Built around three main chapters, with recipes for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and beyond – including the likes of mince pie tarts with miso, sweet ‘n’ sour sprouts and Camembert and chestnut filo Christmas crackers – Riley’s new cookbook is limited to 7000 copies and will be entirely free to order through the chef’s website, aside from postage (£2.95). The book is co-authored with London-based chef and author, Kimberley Duke, and has been backed by Moorish, who produce a range of healthy eating snacks and dips.

Riley said of the new book: “This year has been so tough for everyone but particularly for those living with cancer and I wanted to give back; A Life Kitchen Christmas seemed like the perfect way to do so. Using our science-backed knowledge, we’ve created these delicious recipes in the hope it helps provide the tools for a special Christmas.”

Riley’s Sunderland-based Life Kitchen is the UK’s first cancer cookery school, and provides free cookery lessons nationwide for cancer patients, designed to revive a love of cooking and eating with easy-to-do recipes. It was founded in memory of the chef’s mother, Krista Riley, who passed away from small cell lung cancer in 2013.
