Lidl confirm they hope to start work on Alexandria store in summer 2021

Lidl look set to finally start work on a new store in Alexandria - more than six years after first revealing their hopes to open in the town.

The budget supermarket giant, who opened a new store on Castle Street in Dumbarton earlier this year, have confirmed to the Lennox that they are hopeful of starting work on the Mitchell Way development next year - in a move that it is hoped will breathe new life into the Vale.

Proposals to redevelop the dilapidated Mitchell Way at the heart of the town were first introduced in 2008, with plans hitting a host of setbacks as developers intending to lead the project pulled out.

After years of delays, plans for a new Lidl store as well as homes and retail units were introduced in 2015 - only to be hit by further delays and setbacks.

However at a meeting of West Dunbartonshire Council’s infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee next week, officers will be updated on the progress of the much-needed development.

And a spokesperson for the German supermarket confirmed that they are aiming to begin work on the site next summer.

They told the Lennox: "We can confirm our plans to bring a new store to Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire and hope to start construction in Summer 2021.

"We are very keen to enter the next stage of development and will be working closely with the local council to deliver the project as soon as possible.

"We’re proud to have over 100 stores in Scotland and, with the opening of our new Retail Distribution Centre in Motherwell in late 2019, continue to look for opportunities to bring Lidl to more communities in the coming years. The new store forms part of our £1.45bn expansion programme across Great Britain in 2019 and 2020. "
