Canberra P-platers who maintain a clean driving record will be eligible for discounts on their licence fee.
Those on their red Ps, or P1 licence, who don't attract any demerit points, traffic notices or court-imposed penalties will receive a 50 per cent discount, or $41, on their P2 - or green Ps - licence fee.
If a P-plate driver goes the next two years on their P2 licence without penalties being imposed, they will be able to get a 30 per cent discount on their full licence fee.
Those progressing to a full licence will be able to save $60.40 for a five-year licence or $112.40 for a 10-year licence.
ACT Transport Minister Chris Steel said the new measures aimed to reward P-platers with a spotless driving record.
"Canberra's provisional drivers are over-represented in road crashes, they make up over 10 per cent of crashes despite being just 5 per cent of licensed drivers," Mr Steel said.
"We want to encourage P-plate drivers to be sensible and law-abiding road users, building good habits early to make our roads safer for everyone."
P-plate drivers are on their provisional licence for a three-year period, which is made up of one year on a P1 licence and two years on a P2.
The new initiative comes after government changes to learner and P-plate drivers came into effect at the beginning of 2020.
As part of those measures, provisional licence holders are only allowed to drive with one passenger in the car between 11pm and 5am, unless it is a family member or for work purposes.
P-plate drivers are also subject to a total ban on mobile phone use in the car, including hands-free calls.
The move sparked a backlash at the time it was announced, with some stating the night-time curfew impeded the social lives and work of young people.
Mr Steel said the discount scheme would save P-plate drivers $153 on licence fees over the three-year period.
"Creating good habits in young and new drivers will set them up for safe driving behaviours for the rest of their lives," he said.
