Liam Heath wins thrilling sprint canoe bronze medal for Team GB at Tokyo Olympics 2020

Liam Heath claimed the bronze medal in the sprint canoe final in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 to add to his gold in Rio five years ago.

The Olympic champion had earlier come second fastest in his semi-final test with a time of 35.108.

He was defending the title he won in Rio at the race and the 36-year-old clocked 35.202 seconds in the final.

Hungary's Sandor Totka took the gold at the race with a winning time of 35.035. Italy's Manfredi Rizza won the silver medal.

After his race, Guildford-born Liam said he was happy to complete his 'Olympic set' of gold, silver and bronze after competing in three consecutive Games.

And he paid tribute to his wife Emma for her "incredible support".

"The last 100m is the strongest part of my race, I was a bit hesitant at the start," he said. "I came back into it and I am happy with my performance.

"It is unreal to get three medals at three Games. I have learned so much at each of them, about myself and the people who work with me day in and day out.

"To be able to achieve your dreams - it is not quite gold, but it is my first Olympic medal as a dad.

"My wife is incredible in her support, and I will have to sit down with her now to make a joint decision on my future. So much effort goes into each Olympic cycle.

"A big thanks too to the National Lottery who have helped everybody who has been working through the toughest time this year."

Heath, who set an Olympic-best time of 33.985 seconds during Wednesday's qualifying, took second in the opening semi-final.

And while he could not make it successive golds, it was Guildford-based Heath's fourth Olympic medal following previous K2 sprint success at the Rio Games and London 2012.

Drawn in lane three, Heath delivered a consistent performance, but could not quite threaten the top two.

Totka and Rizza were separated by just 45-hundredths of a second, with Heath leading the charge behind them.

Heath was a gold medallist in the individual 200m kayak sprint event, and a silver in the men's double with Jon Schofield at Rio 2016.

He is the most successful British Olympic canoeist, taking a bronze at the 2012 London Olympics in the K-2 200 with Schofield.

To finance his training before lottery funding, he worked for a time mixing cocktails at T.G.I. Friday's in Guildford. He learned how to mix 150 different drinks.

Heath was awarded an MBE in the Queen's 2017 New Year Honours list for services to canoeing. He was also awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Surrey in the same year and Loughborough University in 2018.
