Lewis Hamilton equals Michael Schumacher's Formula One race wins record after Eifel Grand Prix triumph

Lewis Hamilton has equalled Michael Schumacher's record for Formula One race wins at the Eifel Grand Prix.

The reigning world champion eased to victory at the Nurburgring on Sunday after overtaking Mercedes team-mate and polesitter Valtteri Bottas - who retired soon after due to a power failure - on lap 13 of 60 in Germany.

The win is the 91st of Hamilton's illustrious F1 career - matching the mark previously set by motorsport and Ferrari icon Schumacher, who did so in 308 races.

Six-time world champion Hamilton needed just 261 races to equal the extraordinary feat, having initially missed the chance to do so during a frustrating Sochi Grand Prix in Russia a fortnight ago.

After his record-equalling success, Hamilton was presented with one of Michael Schumacher's race helmets by the German legend's son, Mick.

"I’m so honoured, man," the Briton told Sky Sports. "I don’t even know what to say.

"When you grow up watching someone and you genuinely idolised them, not only in terms of the quality of the driver they are but what they’re able to continually do year on year, race on race, week on week, with their team.

"I remember playing as Michael on a game called Grand Prix 2, I think it was. Seeing his dominance for so long, I don’t think anyone – and especially not me - imagined I’d be anywhere near Michael in terms of records so it’s an incredible honour.

"It’s going to take some time getting used to. When I came into the pit lane that was only when I realised I’d equalled it, I hadn’t even computed it when I crossed the line.

"I couldn’t have done it without this incredible team who are continuing to push behind me and giving it their everything. So a big, big thank you and huge respect to Michael."
