Lewis Ferguson and Josh Doig front the Watford transfer strategy set to become the way forward

There’s a buzz about Watford right now as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

But the Hornets are causing quite a stir with their transfer plans ahead of their return to the big time.

Aberdeen have already been angered by what they feel is a derisory bid for Lewis Ferguson which was quickly booted out but resulted in a transfer request.

And the Hertfordshire side have also been linked with a £4 million move for sought-after Hibs full back Josh Doig.

With a rookie Spanish boss in Xisco Munoz at the Vicarage Road helm and no fewer than 15 foreign nationalities in their squad from Brazil to Bermuda it’s certainly a shift in transfer policy.

It’s a club that has become very cosmopolitan under Italian businessman Gino Pozzo and South American rather than Scotland’s east coast would be a more likely destination in their search for talent.

It’s a market where they’ve been successful after signing the likes of Richarlison who was then moved on for a huge profit.

But with Brexit playing a part in making that market tougher to enter, it seems a move for young British talent is the way forward - and they’re casting their eye north of the border.

Add to that the fact the club's parachute payments that were due this summer after their relegation are instead being shared out between all the clubs due to the COVID pandemic, they won't have the size of transfer budget they were once expecting.

Last summer the club spent zero on new players, while bringing in £44m to help steady the ship. But it seems that they may continue looking for bargains this season, with the club already securing the free transfer signing of Ashley Fletcher from Middlesbrough to bolster their attacking options.

But for Watford - who spent around £137m on new players to try and keep them in England's top flight before then trying to get them back into it following relegation - to be looking to the Scottish Premiership upgrades not only says a lot about how much the league has come along in terms of quality, but also about their own approach to the transfer window this year.

Mo Johnston helped Watford reach their first FA Cup final in 1984 in his only season at the club but Scotland isn't a market they have entered much, with their last signing from the Scottish Premiership being Craig Forsyth from Dundee back in 2011.

He spent just one season at the club though, before being loaned out for two seasons and then joining Derby on a permanent deal in 2013.

He wasn't the last Scotsman to play for the club however, as Ikechi Anya spent four years at Vicarage Road and even made his debut for the national team as a Watford player.

He was a roaring success, helping the side get promoted to the Premier League and even winning the SWFA player of the year award for the 2014-15 season.

Ferguson, 21, has handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move and if successful he would face stiff competition for a place in midfield with vice-captain Tom Cleverley, Will Hughes and Nathaniel Chalobah.

They all have great experience playing in England's top flight, with Cleverley even winning the league during his time at Manchester United.

But Ferguson's drive and eye for goal is something that none of those players possess and he would add something different to Xisco's options.

As for Doig, the teenager who enjoyed a fantastic breakthrough season this season at Easter Road, he would look to dislodge Moroccan international Adam Masina who has been three years at the club.

It’s the success of former Hibee John McGinn at Aston Villa that has made Premier League clubs stand up and take notice of talent north of the border - and Watford want to get in on the action.
