I met George Bennett when we were students at Oxford. His flair for fun and invention came out in 1956 in a spoof Ibsen exhibition pretending to commemorate the great writer, but in fact consisting of items scoured from junkshops, such as a cue labelled: “Ibsen was a secret billiards player.” The hoax fooled many visitors, including some from the national press.

In the late 1990s, the media savvy George Bennett gave useful guidance to colleagues at the IFRC Red Cross in Nairobi on publicising their activities. His advice on field trips to places such as Somalia was face-saving: “When offered camel milk by your hosts, consider the absence of facilities on the plane back to Nairobi.”
