In 1997 the National Theatre revived the show - the war prevented the original production coming to London - with Maria Friedman playing the disturbed magazine editor Liza Elliott, created by Gertrude Lawrence. In an interview in the programme, Carlisle revealed that Hart had approached her to take over from Lawrence during the long Broadway run but she had declined.
She did play Elliott - in a summer production at Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania. Gertrude Lawrence, appearing in The King and I, and with not long to live, coached her in the dances.
