I pride myself on tastefully discussing the shirtless photographs of celebrities in a way that would not offend them. After all, a lot of these shoots are so we will talk about them. But one photoshoot that is just baffling to see if Travis Kelce’s shoot with GQ.
One image from it that made me feel like I’d taken some kind of pill that caused hallucinations was one of him in the ocean wearing a safety vest. Now, to be nice to Kelce, the photo itself isn’t necessarily a bad picture of him. It just doesn’t make any sense which I believe is the fatal flaw of this photoshoot. Whoever was the mastermind behind it misunderstood the art of a shirtless picture.
Being in the ocean is fine. Wearing a safety vest in a photoshoot? Fine. But why are you that far out in the ocean with it on?!
The baffling nature of the photo did take me down a rabbit hole of shirtless pictures. Obviously some publications understand it better than others. GQ thrives when weird fashion is utilized. If you want an actor in a strange shirt and big glasses, they’ll make it work. But their shirtless approach needs a bit of work.
Through thinking about shirtless photos I love, I did come to realize that brands like Calvin Klein and publications like Men’s Health understand it better than most. Two of my all time favorites came from Men’s Health spreads and they’re shirtless photos with a reason behind them, which I think is ultimately the flaw of this Kelce photoshoot.
Every picture I have seen from it includes a somewhat shirtless Kelce but none of them make any sense. Half of them are giving off “white guy on Tinder” vibes and if I’m looking for a great GQ photoshoot, this isn’t really what I would picture.
So if you’re thinking about doing a photoshoot with a celebrity, maybe don’t take the shirtless route that this Travis Kelce photoshoot went. Because that is…a choice.
