Leighton Baines thrust into contention to start against Aston Villa after stepping up injury comeback

Leighton Baines stepped up his return from injury with an extra training session on the day of Everton's game with Watford.

Baines has been thrust into contention to start against Aston Villa on Friday after Lucas Digne was forced off during Saturday's match at Goodison with a hamstring problem.

Digne will undergo a scan and though both the player and Silva left the game believing the issue was not too serious, the left-back is still a doubt for this week's trip to Villa Park.

Baines did a full week of training ahead of the visit of Watford but was not named in the matchday squad, instead doing a session at Finch Farm with the squad members also not picked by Silva.

The veteran defender was not involved in five of Everton's pre-season games, as well as the opening two Premier League games of the season due to a thigh issue.

But Silva looks set to have Baines available to call upon should Digne not be passed fit for the game with Villa.

“Last week, since Monday, he did all the week and today he did a session this morning with the players outside of the squad list and, for sure, he will work with the team on Monday,” Silva said.
