Leigh Griffiths in Celtic reserves selection surprise just 24 hours after first team appearance

Leigh Griffiths has been handed a surprise start in the Reserve Cup for Celtic against Dundee.

The frontman played just 12 minutes for the Hoops against Hearts on Sunday when he replaced Vakoun Bayo and has struggled for regular first team action this season.

With Odsonne Edouard the key man for the Hoops, Neil Lennon decided to hand Bayo a first start on Sunday and was rewarded with a double.

And it's left Griffiths having to drop down to the second strike to get some game time under his belt and it comes against his former club Dundee.

The Scotland star will be hoping to be back in Steve Clarke's squad when it is named on Tuesday but will need more first team football to stake a claim for a starting spot.

Griffiths last started a league game for Celtic against Motherwell earlier in August and was also selected form the start in the cup game against Dunfermline.

He's unlikely to lead the line on Thursday against AIK in Sweden or in the first derby of the season against Rangers on Sunday.

It was a young squad put out by Tommy McIntyre with Armstrong Oko-Flex, Jack Aitchison and Barry Coffey all playing.

There was no space for Karamoko Dembele or summer signings Luca Connell and Jonathan Afolabi.

But former Rangers midfielder Liam Burt did line up in the middle of the park alongside Coffey and Scott Robertson.
