Leicester's Brendan Rodgers ready to smash transfer record for Youri Tielemans

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed he could break Leicester’s transfer record this summer.

The Foxes’ largest fee to date is £29million, on Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani after they won the title in 2016 and were preparing for Champions League football.

Now, boss Rodgers is set to splash their cash again after joining from Scottish champions Celtic in February.

He wants to buy impressive on-loan midfielder Youri Tielemans, but a deal with the 21-year-old's parent club Monaco would cost £40m.

Asked if he could break City’s transfer record this summer, Rodgers replied: “The money is going up, absolutely. We shall see. As you know, the numbers go up each year. You pay for quality. The notion has been to bring in a talent and develop them. There is a lot of work going on and a weekly meeting in terms of recruitment.

“There is daily dialogue in terms of players. It is never easy when you are trying to bring in players to improve the squad. It is always complex but there is a lot of great work by the guys going on behind the scenes.”

Rodgers is preparing to host Arsenal on Sunday as Leicester continue to chase a seventh place finish — and a possible Europa League spot.

The Gunners are into the semi-finals of that same competition, but progress in Europe can come at a cost — Unai Emery’s side have slumped to successive defeats in the Premier League, to Crystal Palace and Wolves, since winning their last-eight tie.

And Rodgers admitted: “They have done a great job in the Europa League, but sometimes fatigue sets in at this time of the season. It can do, there is no doubt - especially this end part of the season. You just have to hang in there.

“That mental and physical fitness is so important at this stage of the season. Every game means everything at this point of the season. This is the business end, both in terms of domestic and Europe. It is very challenging, but it is what you want.

“For the likes of them (Arsenal), it has been a tough run. But they are a top side and focused on doing well. When the opposition think there is a vulnerability, the top teams respond. We are preparing for a very difficult game.”
