Supercars legend Craig Lowndes's 30th Bathurst 1000 race ended in disappointment.

The seven-time Bathurst winner was forced into the Mount Panorama pits after lap-18 due to a broken gear lever mount.

After starting Sunday's great race from 20th, Lowndes had made up six places in his Chevrolet in an impressive early performance.

But Triple Eight's wildcard entry, with Lowndes sharing driving with Zane Goddard, slowed up suddenly and was then directed into the garage.

The 49-year-old was captured shaking his head upon entering the pits, as the Camaro spent four laps being worked on by engineers.

Lowndes then handed over to Goddard, who had yet to finish a Bathurst 1000 in his previous three attempts.

The pair finished 24th, only ahead of four cars that didn't finish.

"I don't think I've ever been with a team who worked so hard for such a little result," Lowndes said.

"I think we might've set a new record for the amount of times we came in and out of the pits

"It was a disappointing result, however overall, the team worked unbelievably hard to get us the result we did.

"I think if we had our time over again, we had a car that could've made the top six, in that sense there is a slight disappointment, however, we all worked damn hard to achieve the result we did.".

Goddard earned the ire of the paddock at Bathurst last year when he attempted to overtake after a restart and lost control, resulting in a three-car pile-up with all vehicles wrecked.

Lowndes retired from full-time racing at the end of 2018, but the motorsport icon has continued to compete in enduro races.

He first won at Bathurst in 1996 when partnered with Greg Murphy, and last won at the famous venue in 2018 with Steven Richards.
