The release of a Tunisian extremist man, who once served as Osama bin Laden's bodyguard, has sparked a legal controversy in Germany.
Tunis authorities had decided there was not enough evidence to keep holding Sami Aidoudi, but investigations would continue, said Sofian Sliti, spokesman of Tunisia's anti-terrorist judiciary body, last week.
The suspect had been taken into custody in Tunisia on July 13, upon his arrival in the country after being expelled by Germany.
His expulsion from Germany was overturned by a court ruling the same day, but the order was made only after his plane was already airborne.
The administrative court in Gelsenkirchen described his deportation as "grossly illegal" and demanded he be brought back to Germany. It has threatened to slap the immigration authority in Bochum with a €10,000 ($11,700) fine if it fails to return Aidoudi by the end of July.

Several German politicians have called for the suspect’s return to Germany.
Armin Schuster, a member of the German Bundestag, has said that Aidoudi should return to Germany, ruling out possible torture by Tunisian authorities.
But other politicians said the suspect shouldn’t return because he would represent a threat to his community.
