Legal action begins as caravans return to council land for second time in four months

Legal action was launched after travellers arrived on council land for the second time in a matter of months.

Around 20 caravans arrived on the former Kew Park & Ride site in Southport on Monday and have remained in place since then.

One Southport resident saw the group while walking near the site and said the number of caravans was significantly higher than on previous occasions.

In March, Sefton Council took the matter to court when a group settled on the same location. That process is now under way again.

A spokesperson confirmed that the authority has been made aware.

They said: "As a result we immediately instigated standard welfare and legal proceedings to ensure they are removed as soon as legislation allows.”

The Park & Ride opened in 2007 but was chronically underused with just 600 passengers per week at a cost of £272,000 per year. It closed in 2010 before reopening for an unsuccessful trial period in 2012 and has lain empty ever since.

In recent years, it has been Merseyside’s most frequently used site for illegal camps but could soon finally be developed for housing. Earlier this month’s the Sefton’s cabinet authorised a decision to allow the council owned Sandway Homes to develop the land.

A planning application seeking permission to build 87 homes on the land is expected to be submitted in the current financial year.
