Left wing Glasgow councillor joins race to become Scottish Labour deputy leader

A left wing Glasgow councillor has joined the race to become the next deputy leader of Scottish Labour .

Matt Kerr, who also stood for the party at the general election, has been nominated for the job by other colleagues across Scotland.

Four contenders are now vying to replace ex-MP Lesley Laird as Richard Leonard ’s number two.

MSPs Jackie Baillie and Pauline McNeill, whose plan to job share was deemed to be outwith party rules , are standing, as is Dundee councillor Michael Marra.

Kerr is a Jeremy Corbyn supporter who is likely to receive strong support from the trade unions.

His name appeared on the “Scottish Labour hub” today as a potential candidate who had received nine nominations.
