Leeds woman describes 'appalling' Steps gig at Yorkshire Wildlife Park with 'fans in tears'

A Leeds woman has described seeing fans of pop band Steps leaving a concert early as they couldn't hear the music.

Music fan Anne-Marie Jones, 36, took her sister Sarah, 34, a wheelchair user, to the Steps gig at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday night, but they weren't impressed.

Anne-Marie said Steps arrived on stage just before 8pm but she wasn't aware the gig had started as she could not hear anything. "We didn't even know they were on stage," she said.

"We could not hear them and the TV screen to our left going on and off and upside down. Everybody was chanting 'turn it up' but nothing got done. The music would go on for a minute and then down again.

"Finally, we decided to leave at 9. As we were heading back to the car park, which was extremely hard to reach in a wheelchair, we started to hear the music. That was just 10 minutes before the end of the concert."

Anne-Marie and Sarah were in the bronze area of the crowd, having paid around £20 each for their tickets. A friend in the silver section told Anne-Marie that they were able to hear the music just fine and had witnessed an 'amazing concert'.

"It was ruined for us," said Anne-Marie.

"People were so upset. One teenage girl burst into tears because she could not hear. And the queues for the toilets were atrocious.

"It was appalling - mainly because we couldn't hear them. The number of people that left after 10 minutes was ridiculous. They were just leaving."

Anne-Marie said she would be complaining to Yorkshire Wildlife Park and asking for a refund.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Wildlife Park apologised for the sound issues, saying there had been a 'localised problem' in the bronze section.

"We are sorry. There was a localised problem in part of the bronze section when a sound deck had to be rebooted."

The spokesman said the sound deck had to be rebooted 'at the start'. He said the problem had affected a small number of fans in the 10,000 crowd.

Asked about refunds, the spokesman said: "Any complaint will be dealt with one by one, on their merits."
