Leeds United winger sets perfect example for U23 players, says ex-Premier League boss

Raphinha's Leeds United career could hardly have got off to a better start.

With four goals and four assists to his name, the Brazilian has been a revelation since arriving last October.

Raphinha's first Elland Road strike came in midweek against Everton, delicately stroking the ball beyond an in-form Robin Olsen in the Everton net.

Ultimately it did not prove to be enough to get Leeds back in the game, but one of the major take-aways from the match was Raphinha's positive performance.

According to Opta, the 24-year-old completed more sprints than any other player on the pitch and it is not hard to believe.

Marcelo Bielsa on Leeds United's second half improvement

Former Aston Villa and Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has spoken to Football Insider about the Leeds winger, running out of superlatives to describe his Everton display.

“Not only did he get a terrific goal, he is doing the work demands of Bielsa as well.

"Normally you would think it’s a player that might not chase as much as a teammate would," McLeish says, perhaps drawing on the stereotypes often attributed to flair players.

The Scot continued to praise Raphinha's endeavour, making reference to one particular instance in the Everton contest.

“There was once when Leeds were having a brilliant spell in the game at 2-1 down, he lost the ball on the right side of the play.

"Everton moved it to the other side and he chased it all the way and, lo and behold, he actually got it back and Leeds mounted another attack.

“If you were ever going to show a video excerpt to young players, it would be that one to say: ‘Look what this guy did when he lost the ball.’"

McLeish's endorsement is one of the most glowing yet, but it comes in light of one of Raphinha's finest outings as a Leeds player.

“It would be a great learner for young players who just like to show the skill side of the game without doing the actual hard work," he added.

Considering he has only been at the club a matter of months, and at just 24 years old, the potential Raphinha possesses is quite frightening.

Already, he has asserted himself as the side's starting right-winger, ousting last season's incumbent Helder Costa without any trouble.

If McLeish's comments are anything to go by, there will be yet more praise for the Brazilian in weeks to come from all corners of footballing punditry.
