Leeds United vs Leicester referee and VAR officials confirmed as Raphinha debate surfaces again

Premier League referee Peter Bankes will be on hand to take care of VAR duties for Leeds United's clash with Leicester City at Elland Road on Sunday.

This decision comes on the back of Bankes' involvement in a contentious moment in Leeds' last home game. Romain Saiss' tackle on Raphinha was heavily debated in the days that followed the draw with Wolves, especially in light of Paul Pogba's sending off for a very similar challenge in Manchester United’s 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

Luckily, Raphinha's injury wasn't as bad as it first appeared to be with the Brazilian international netting superbly just last week in his side's 2-1 victory over Norwich City.

Referee Bankes will be joined by Assistant VAR referee Neil Davies as Darren England takes charge of the 2pm kick-off on Sunday afternoon.

The Whites will be looking to make it back to back victories this weekend following a slow start to the campaign that has seen them only record two victories thus far.

As for the visitors Leicester, they will be looking for their first win on the road since August, when they defeated Norwich City 2-1 at Carrow Road thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton.

In terms of the key decision in Leeds last home game, many could not believe that the Video Assistant Referee did not take a second look at the Saiss foul, with former referee Dermot Gallagher providing his own explanation.

He said: "The VAR probably felt that he’d hurdled him, the same as the referee. I can only give my opinion. The player has had to leave the field because of the injury. I think if he (Saiss) got a red card he couldn’t complain. I think he’s very lucky. I think this is very similar to Pogba."

Marcelo Bielsa's side have struggled in front of their home fans so far this season, with striker Patrick Bamford still expected to miss the game through an ongoing ankle injury.

Midfielder Kalvin Phillips has returned in recent weeks and it is hoped the likes of Dan James, Rodrigo and Raphinha can find the key to unlock the Foxes back line this weekend.
