Leeds United urged to sign free agent following his exit from Aston Villa

Leeds United should make a move for Tommy Elphick after he was released by Aston Villa.

That’s according to former striker Noel Whelan, who believes the free agent would be a solid addition for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

The 31-year-old defender, who was signed for £4m from Bournemouth following the club’s relegation from the Premier League in 2016, only made 50 appearances during his three years at Villa Park.

He spent time on loan with Reading and Hull City before returning to the club in January, where his chance to make an impression in Dean Smith’s side was brought to a premature end following an injury sustained in March.

He was released at the end of the campaign and Whelan believes he should be drafted in by Leeds to compete with Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper next season.

“Leeds will be looking at him. I would be if I was in charge, absolutely. Leeds have looked at him before and he’d still be perfect for us,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s a proper defender, aggressive, good in the air, commanding, a good player. You need players with Championship experience who know the league and we need a new centre-back, even if Pontus Jansson stays.

“He could be a great free signing and a great signing for next season.”
