Leeds United transfer rumours as Whites' January pursuit of Gakpo questioned and Harrison Ashby links

Here are the latest Leeds United transfer rumours on Wednesday, September 7.

Has the Gakpo ship sailed?

Phil Hay of The Athletic expects Cody Gakpo to prioritise Champions League football if he impresses with the Netherlands at this winter's World Cup. The PSV Eindhoven winger has started the season in impressive fashion - scoring seven goals and providing six assists in just nine outings.

Victor Orta travelled to Eindhoven for negotiations after Leeds tabled a bid for Gakpo on transfer deadline day. However, the Whites' bid was rejected and The Athletic's Phil Hay admits that they may have missed their chance of securing the talented Dutchman's signature.

Talking on his podcast for The Athletic, Hay said: “If Gakpo goes to the World Cup, if Gakpo has a good World Cup, if he has a good domestic season with PSV, his value’s going to increase; his value’s going to go up. And I think he will move fairly rapidly into the Champions League bracket.

"So I would question, quite honestly, whether beyond this window Leeds have much chance of signing him at all. I’m not sure how realistic that is.

“That’s not to say that they can’t. But something tells me that if they were going to, further beyond this window that’s just gone, then they’re going to have to seriously, seriously push the boat out.”

Leeds considering West Ham full-back

Leeds are still 'hovering' over the possibility of signing West Ham United right-back Harrison Ashby. Insider ExWHUemployee claimed on The West Ham Way Podcast that Leeds have offered Ashby the prospect of playing more first team football than he is currently receiving at the London Stadium.

Ashby also attracted interest from Newcastle United during the summer transfer window, while Leeds were also reportedly considering a move for the 20-year-old on transfer deadline day.

The Whites signed West Ham academy graduate Sonny Perkins earlier this summer after the young forward rejected a new deal with the Hammers.

Ashby was an unused substitute in the Hammers' defeats against Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively. He also completed the full 90 minutes at right wingback as West Ham prevailed 3-1 over Danish outfit Viborg FF in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier first leg.

He made his Premier League debut as a late second-half substitute in West Ham's 2-0 against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in December 2021. Ashby, who joined the Hammers from Chelsea in 2010, has amassed six first-team appearances for West Ham across all competitions.

Ex-Leeds midfielder Snodgrass joins Hearts

Former Leeds United star Robert Snodgrass has joined Scottish Premiership outfit Hearts after turning down a number of offers from other Scottish clubs. Snodgrass had previously been linked with a move to Motherwell

The 35-year-old became a free agent after leaving Luton Town at the end of the 2021/22 season and returns to Scotland for the first time since joining Leeds from Livingston in 2008.

Snodgrass scored 41 goals and provided 40 assists in 191 appearances across all competitions during his four seasons with the Whites and achieved promotion to the Championship in 2010. He left Elland Road to join Norwich City in the Premier League, before going onto feature for Hull City and West Ham respectively in the English top-flight.

The Scotsman, who has been capped 28 times for his country, also had a loan spell at Aston Villa and rounded off his career in England with West Brom and Luton respectively. He registered 26 goals and 25 assists in 171 appearances in the Premier League.
