Leeds United's Tyler Adams criticised for 'one mistake he's made this entire tournament'

Clint Dempsey believes Leeds United's Tyler Adams was at fault for the first goal the USA conceded in their World Cup Round of 16 tie against the Netherlands which they lost 3-1.

The Dutch forward finished off a superb team move that saw him fire home past Arsenal's Matt Turner from just inside the box to give Louis van Gaal's side a 1-0 lead after just 10 minutes.

The flowing move saw Cody Gakpo shift the ball out wide to wing-back Denzel Dumfries, who then fired a cut back into the path of Depay to finish.

Had Adams, who was the closest USA player to Depay, not allowed the Barcelona forward to drift in front of him, the goal could potentially have been prevented.

Daley Blind would double the Netherlands lead on the stroke of half time, before the USA managed to reply through Haji Wright after the break.

However, Dumfries then wrapped up proceedings for the Dutch with a fine finish on 81 minutes, dumping the USA and Adams out of the World Cup.

Having barely put a foot wrong all tournament for the USA prior to their Round of 16 clash, Adams mistake came at the worst time possible for Gregg Berhalter's side.

And former Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham forward Dempsey believes the Whites midfielder will not be wanting to watch Depay's goal back.

"Tyler Adams is going to hate watching this back," said Dempsey on FOX Sports. "Memphis just beats him to the spot. Not fun to watch. It's unfortunate for Tyler, the one mistake he's made this entire tournament and he's got punished for it."
