Leeds United's latest touch of class as the city fights coronavirus outbreak

Elland Road’s beer and food, wasting away with no football, has been donated to a Holbeck charity by Leeds United.

As the coronavirus outbreak takes hold in the UK with the nation locked down in the main, Whites chiefs have looked to support their surrounding community.

The next scheduled home match is May 2, but few expect that to be honoured, and that means plenty of supplies are going to waste at the stadium.

On Wednesday afternoon, chief executive Angus Kinnear and general manager Rob Smyth visited Holbeck Together with the donation.

“To see what some people, not just in our local community, but across the world are going through at this time is devastating and of course as a club, we will try to help those we can,” said Smyth.

“We have taken some food packages to Holbeck Together this afternoon and to know this food will help to support people that are really struggling at the moment is really important, we will continue to support them where possible during this difficult period.”

Pies, meat, vegetables, dessert, ales and other provisions from the stadium have been handed over the charity to support those most in need.

Holbeck Together was established as a neighbourhood network scheme in 1992 to support older people living in the local community.

The charity recently expanded their network to provide a variety of services, activities and opportunities for people from all generations.

Elissa Newman, chief officer at Holbeck Together, said: “We can’t thank Angus Kinnear and the whole team at Leeds United enough for responding so quickly to our appeal for assistance in these unprecedented times.

“It makes a tremendous difference to have the support of Leeds United Football Club and it’s heartening to see their very real commitment to supporting the local South Leeds communities.

“Leeds United has literally emptied their food stocks to enable us to continue to deliver hot, nutritious meals, shopping and other vital supplies to those who can't make it out themselves, and it's been a real team effort with an outpouring of support.

“A huge thank you.”
