Leeds United player ratings as Pablo Hernandez dazzles in statement win at Bristol City

Leeds United beat Bristol City 3-1 at Ashton Gate in their opening Championship clash of the season.

Goals came from Pablo Hernandez, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison as the Whites sent out an early message to the rest of the division.

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

13 Kiko Casilla - six

One save stood out. A low jab to keep out Josh Brownhill through a crowd of bodies. Aside from that, the main incidents involved him abandoning his penalty box to play outfield. Nothing has changed since that Derby County match. Does nothing for the heart rate. Still feels like he takes more risks than he needs to.

15 Stuart Dallas - six

Would not have been upset to see Callum O'Dowda exit the fray in the second half. The Irish winger had Dallas's number, but never created anything dangerous from it. Dallas was keen and willing to get forward, but sometimes found his passing off. A dependable cog, but United's flanks were their weak points at times.

5 Ben White - eight

Very assured and confident on the ball. If this is an example of what United can expect week in, week out from their centre-backs, they will be very happy. Clear to see why Marcelo Bielsa wanted him, despite the lack of exposure previously in his career. Good in the air and on the deck.

6 Liam Cooper © - seven

Barely troubled by Famara Diedhiou and commanding alongside White. Led the team well. Communication with Casilla still needs improvement.

3 Barry Douglas - five

As with Dallas, seemed to find his flank an opening for the hosts. Tucked in frequently and left the space down the right for Andreas Weimann, which may, of course, be a tactical choice by Bielsa. Still waiting for that attacking impact down the left flank.

23 Kalvin Phillips - seven

A few too many fouls, but that's the role he plays. Tackling and passing in an important part of the pitch again. Had a tough time with Kasey Palmer at times, but generally solid.

19 Pablo Hernandez - eight

Because we have to save the nines for his braces. Magnificent. Started the season faster than anyone and was on another level creatively through the first 10 minutes. Nothing, but class with the first and then the quick thinking, quick feet combo to assist Patrick Bamford.

4 Adam Forshaw - seven

Shaky under pressure in the opening quarter, but found his feet and his fitness was crucial in moving the team up and down the pitch, supporting those around him, offering a passing option. Could have had a goal or two of his own with strikes from range. Began the move for the opener with a 50-yard cross-field pearler to Jack Harrison.

43 Mateusz Klich - seven

Perhaps not as instrumental as he was in Cagliari, but like Forshaw, his work rate and fitness gave zip through the middle. Time will tell whether he and Forshaw works through the centre as a pair. No doubt the guile of Hernandez is welcome in there.

22 Jack Harrison - seven

Got the goal he and everyone wanted for him to get this season off the start his pre-season promised. Not always perfect with his delivery, but better than last season and it was his legs, keeping up with play, which yielded his goal.

9 Patrick Bamford - six

It would be easy to go overboard with one goal, but aside from that the striker did not cause too many issues. It was the story of pre-season until Hernandez planted that cross on his head, which will do far more for him in the long-term than some knee-jerk rating on the internet.

Substitutes

30 Kamil Miazek

10 Ezgjan Alioski (on for Douglas 79min) - N/A

Too late to give him a fair mark. Straight swap at left-back for Douglas and had to do plenty of defending with Bristol coming on strong.

17 Helder Costa (on for Klich 76min) - six

Not a great deal of time to impact the match with Bristol chasing and Leeds defending. Played wide right.

36 Robbie Gotts

40 Leif Davis (on for Harrison 85min) - N/A

Late switch to save Harrison's legs. Went to left-back and pushed Alioski up.

44 Mateusz Bogusz

47 Jack Clarke
